Early Life and Career

Richard Harding Davis was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, on April 18, 1864. His father, L. Clarke Davis, was a prominent journalist and editor, and his mother, Rebecca Harding Davis, was a well-known novelist. Davis was educated at Episcopal Academy in Philadelphia and Lehigh University. After graduating from Lehigh in 1886, Davis worked as a reporter for the Philadelphia Press and the New York Sun.
