Lucky was just a puppy when she first met Dolan. She was scavenging for food in a village that had been recently bombed. Dolan was on patrol with his unit when he saw her. She was thin and dirty, but there was something about her eyes that caught his attention.
Dolan decided to take Lucky back to his base. He gave her food and water, and he made her a bed in his tent. Lucky quickly became a part of the unit, and the soldiers grew to love her. She would follow them on patrol, and she would always be there to greet them when they returned to base.
One day, Dolan's unit was ambushed by the Viet Cong. The soldiers were outnumbered and outgunned, and they were forced to retreat. Dolan was wounded in the leg, and he fell behind the others. Lucky stayed with him, and she licked his wounds and kept him warm.
The Viet Cong soldiers were closing in, and Dolan knew that he didn't have much time. He looked at Lucky, and he knew that she was his only hope. He whispered something in her ear, and then he handed her his rifle.
Lucky took the rifle and charged at the Viet Cong soldiers. She barked and growled at them, and she even bit one of them on the leg. The Viet Cong soldiers were surprised by Lucky's attack, and they hesitated for a moment. That moment was all that Dolan needed. He grabbed his rifle and fired at the Viet Cong soldiers, driving them away.
Dolan and Lucky made it back to their base safely, and they were both hailed as heroes. Lucky had saved Dolan's life, and Dolan knew that he would never be able to repay her.
After the war, Dolan brought Lucky home to the United States. They lived together for many years, and they were inseparable. Lucky was a constant reminder of Dolan's time in Vietnam, and she was a symbol of the friendship and loyalty that had saved his life.
Lucky died in 2005, at the age of 18. Dolan was heartbroken, but he knew that he would never forget his loyal friend. He buried Lucky in his backyard, next to the flagpole.
The story of Lucky and Dolan is a reminder that even in the darkest of times, there is always hope. It is a story of friendship, loyalty, and love. It is a story that will never be forgotten.
